For Athens I had arranged for us to join an all day private tour of Athens with other Cruise Critic(CC) members, which had booked a tour with Athens by Taxi. The day we arrived in Athens Joe was not feeling well, so I joined the ten other CC members and we spent the day hitting Athens highlights including the Acropolis, the National Archaeological Museum, the Old Palace, the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier in front of the Parliament, the Changing of The Guards, the Temple of Zeus, the Panathenaic Stadium (the original stadium built in the 1863 for the first modern Olympic games in 1896), Mount Lycabettous, the Plaka, the Greek Agora, the Ancient Agora of Athens and the Tower of Winds. Demitri, our driver, was extremely knowledgeable about Athens and keep in contact with other drivers to avoid going through the area of Athens where they were rioting. It was an extremely exhausting, but throughly enjoyable day.

Another Greek destination was Santorini. To get up the cliff. you take a cable car up. With several ships in port, the wait to go back down was well over an hour and I refused to ride the over-worked donkeys, so we walked down the 600 steps to get back to sea level, avoiding the donkey droppings along the way.

Other stops included Messina and Rhodes, a walled city

Our last Greek island stop was Mykonos. Mykonos is a beautiful Greek island with stark white houses set against the deep blue sea. We rented a scooter for the day to tour the island. While riding the scooter a car grazed us from behind and we hit the pavement. We were both wearing helmets and Sue was wearing jeans. We were lucky and did not have any serious injuries, except for some scrapes and bruises from hitting the asphalt. We were really sore the next few days so we stayed on the ship, instead of touring the island of Capri.

ngg_shortcode_0_placeholder

One of the destinations of the Celebrity Equinox was Piraeus (Athens), Greece.
