Copenhagen, Denmark – 2012

Weds 7/25/12
Copenhagen, Denmark

We arrived at CHP around 2. Bought a 72 hour Copenhagen card and took the train to the central station and then walked a block to the hotel, The Radisson Blu Royal. After resting a few hours we took the bus to the Nyhavn area to see the sand sculptures. Walked around Nyhavn a bit and took the bus back to the Tivoli area, had dinner and then crashed, since we slept very little on the plane.

Thur 7/26/12

After breakfast, we took the train to Helsingor and then walked to Kronborg Castle. After touring the castle we took a train, the long way around to Hillerod, which meant the 20 min ride ended up being 1.5 hrs. On a positive note, it allowed us to see more of the countryside. 🙂

From the train station we hopped on a bus to the castle stop to tour Frederiksborg Castle and grounds, which is the Danish National History museum and was quite impressive. After touring the castle and grounds we took a bus back to the train station, then took the train back to Copenhagen. I was beat. We did go out for dinner, but I was finished touring for the day.

Fri 7/27/12

We took the bus to Rosenborg Slot stop then walked to Rosenborg Slot to tour the royal treasure rooms, which were quite impressive. From the castle we took a bus to Nyhavn for a canal cruise, through Copenhagen’s canals viewing with commentary most of Copenhagen’s highlights.

After lunch and a brief break back at the hotel, we took the local train to Osterport then walked to the Marble Church, Amalienborg Palace and then along the harbor to the Little Mermaid statue, which was smaller than expected, but with lot of visitors. From the statue we walked back to Osterport and took the S train back to Vesterport, had dinner and then toured Tivoli Gardens.

Sat 7/28/12

Checked out of the hotel, left our luggage there and then walked to the  Hans Christian Anderson Museum. The museum was interesting, but not air conditioned as were most buildings in Copenhagen, so we breezed through it and then walked to the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek.

The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek was the last of our Copenhagen bucket list and ended up being one of the highlights, because the museum housed quite the French Impressionist collection of paintings by Degas, Picasso, Paul Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec,Van Gogh, Cézanne, Monet, and Manet, etc. I loved viewing the paintings so much more than studying about them in my boring freshman art history class in college. 🙂 Perhaps I actually got more out of that class than my grade reflected. The museum also had a wonderful collection of Ancient Mediterranean statues and artifacts.

After a late lunch it was time to head to the port to board the Emerald Princess, our home for the next eleven nights.
